Day 7 - Kiawah - The day the Sea Gulls Attacked!

Thursday – July 3, 2008

Have you ever watched the Alfred Hitchcock movie “The Bird’s?” Bill and I both have several times. This evening we felt as if we were a part of the movie itself. Instead of watching out for the black birds, we had to keep our eyes on the sea gulls. We were eating our supper out on the deck, when all of a sudden we heard a sea gull having a fit!!!!! It was squawking so loud it could have probably been heard from the other end of the island.
Unbeknownst to us, we were the reason it was having such a fit! Every evening we have been out on the deck we watch the pelicans and sea gulls fly their usual path right above the corner of our deck. Bill has plenty of pictures to share of their flight pattern. Why would we think this evening would be different than the other evenings we were outside eating and watching the tide come in closer to the shore line? There was absolutely no reason!
For a good five minutes the sea gulls flew by us with one making as loud a racket as possible. We looked below and above us to see if something was disturbing them. We saw nothing! We then decided it might be the family upstairs trying to feed them. Wrong again. Finally, Bill said let’s go inside and leave our trays outside to see if they want our food. We had no more gotten inside the door when swoosh – one sea gull dived down and took a roll off one of the trays!!! Bill rushed to get the camera when whoosh – another sea gull swooped down. He managed to get a couple of shots while standing inside. We then decided to see if he could sneak back onto the deck and take pictures.
These sea gulls were literally attacking the trays. Bill managed to get onto the deck and was able to get pictures of at least four or five gulls swooping down and trying to take care of our left over food! I’m not sure it will be safe to go back out and eat on the deck again – but I’m sure we will.
That was the most exciting thing we experienced today! It was another lazy and relaxing day with us walking and sitting on the beach. We had access to an umbrella and two chairs which was really nice. We didn’t have to set them up and carry them back!
A person could get use to this laid back way of life, but we all know it will have to come to an end soon!
