The Traveling Duo

Thursday, July 31, 2008

I would like to start this posting with a big thank you for all the prayers for Laurie, Darcie, and the rest of the family. Everyone is home now – or at least out of the hospital. Soreness, stiffness, aches, and pains have set in for all involved in the wreck! We are just so thankful the injuries weren’t any more severe than they were! We do have a gracious and loving God!

The traveling duo was gone for a couple of days this week – in case you are wondering who has that title - it is none other than Bill and me! We had already put together a new post before the accident and decided to hold off and post “Blessings” to let John, Laurie, and the kids know we were thinking about them! So, now begins our July 29 -30 posting.

July 29 started off with us finishing packing for a trip to Cincinnati. I would almost be safe in saying that most of you think we are going to a baseball game – wrong!!!! Since spring, Bill has gotten hooked on watching tennis matches on the tennis station. He knows most of the top ten men and women by name and face – I’m still trying to figure who is who! He ordered tickets for the men’s professional tournament being held in Cincinnati. Many of the top ranked men were planning on participating (the top 44 were part of the 64 participants). We had no idea as to whom we would be watching Wednesday night. Bill was hoping it would be one of the top seeds.

The match was to start at 7:00. We got to the stadium around 5:30 so we could eat a bite before watching the match. We found us something to eat and ventured over to a large white tent that had tables and chairs set up. We found a table and sat down to eat. The tent was also host to a live band that made very loud music. They were playing “oldies”, so the songs were fine, but the level of the music was 20 decibels too high for these old folks!! I’m sure the folks at King’s Island could have heard the music and them being a mile away!

We finished our sandwiches and ventured away from the tent toward the area where we to go to our seats. There was a large crowd and the heat was unbelievable! Bill went to the restroom before we went to the stands, and when he came out of there he looked as white as a ghost! He barely could move one foot in front of the other. He made it over to a railing and hung on for dear life. I ran over to him, and he told me he felt as if he was going to pass out – he looked as if he were going to as well. I found a chair, and he sat down. There were some good Samaritans who stopped by to offer their help. They got an ice pack for us to place on his neck, and a young boy gave him a bottle of ice cold water. He was suffering from heat exhaustion. He did not drink as much water as normal because he didn’t want to stop every fifteen minutes and go to the restroom. Between lack of water, the extreme heat, the anxiety of being in the large crowd and loud noise caused him to hyperventilate and almost pass out on me right there!!! It scared the daylights out of me and him! I told him if he upped and died on me I would not talk to him ever again!!!!

I was ready to take him to the hospital and head back to the hills of WV. But no – he came all that way to see a professional tennis match, and he was bound and determined we were staying! I relented when I saw the color coming back to his face and him assuring me he was feeling better. We were going to be able to watch the number 6 seed, Andy Roddick. Bill had watched him on TV – usually when I was at Mom’s – thus the reason he knew the tennis players and I didn’t. He decided he was able to walk – he was weak – but we found our way to our seats. By the time we sat down, Bill’s knees were as weak as dishwater and so were mine – mine was from fear! Our seats were bleacher type seats, but were in a great location. We had a great view of the stadium and a good breeze was blowing which helped Bill tremendously.

Maybe the shirt he has on contributed to this episode - too many hot chicks - more than he saw at the beach! :):):):):)

As we settled in to get ready to watch the match, Andy Roddick took the microphone to make an announcement. He was withdrawing from the tournament due to tightness in his neck and shoulders. He didn’t feel as if he could play with this tightness. Okay – do we go home now since the top seed we would be able to watch was not going to play? No, we stay – partly because Bill was still a little weak and partly because we had come a long way to watch a tennis

match! We ended up watching two players by the names of Jun and Kohlschreiber play.

Have no idea how to pronounce that last name, but he was the one who won the match. Jun was the one who replaced Andy Roddick, so he probably wasn’t as ready to play. It ended up being a really neat game to watch - they were both great players.

The next game was to be a doubles match. Two Americans against one American and a Korean were going battle it out on the court. We stayed and watched the first set with the two Americans winning. It was interesting to watch them as they tried to set up a play – similar to volleyball. While watching these four play, we did notice a major difference from the first match - the announcer “ssshhhh” the crowd. The entire stadium got quiet, and I mean quiet – a lot faster than a gymnasium full of kids! It was unbelievable! He would also say “quiet” and “time” with the reaction of the players and the observers being immediate. Adults would slink down if they were going to their seats when the announcer said quiet.

We left after the first set and returned to our motel with no problem. Bill was still weak, but we didn’t have to walk that far! After a good night’s sleep, and me coaxing him to drink water, he felt better the next morning (he also got a Frosty from Wendy’s). We had tickets for the 11:00 match but opted to come on home. The heat index was to be extremely high, and we felt we had already had one too many episodes of heat exhaustion.

There were a couple of other things that caught our eye – one was a sign that said “Oooops, you just missed us – Motel 8 exit was the one behind you!” We though this was hilarious! Another sign said “Church for people who don’t like Church.” We’re not sure what this one means – anybody’s guess could be correct.

The price of gas was another interesting thing we encountered. We saved almost $8.00 for a tank of gas when we filled up before leaving Cincinnati. Gas was $3.569 a gallon!!!!!!! When we left home, we passed a station in Lavalette that had gas listed as $4.09 a gallon!! It is just a little too far to go back when we need to fill up the tank!

These two travelers are glad to be home and with all feeling better – especially Toby, who got a tennis ball from Cincinnati! Till next time, love to you all!
Toby is chasing his new tennis ball - it's a larger version than the regular tennis ball! He chased it all over the room.

Blessings

Blessings

May you wake
each day with God’s
blessings and sleep
each night in His
keeping, and may you
always walk
in His tender care.

Last night was not a good night for my brother’s family in Doylestown, Ohio. John – my twin brother and the oldest by four minutes (Sorry John, I had to let all who read this know who is the oldest!) – and his precious family had a terrible scare. My sister-in-law Laurie and Darcie, my nephew JD’s wife were out with the twins in Doylestown. They were hit by another vehicle. The twins were not hurt - just scared. Laurie was jarred up pretty bad with bruises, broken tooth, back and head aches, and general soreness all over her body which resulted from the hit and the air bag. Darcie was hurt a little more severely. Both had jumped out of the vehicle to check on the boys. Both were able to walk – which was a blessing in disguise. After being checked out at the hospital, it was discovered that Darcie actually had a broken neck! Her break is around the area where the spine and skull meet. The doctor told the family she should be able to have a full recovery. For this we are sincerely thankful. On top of all this, Caleb, one of the twins, fell on the steps and broke his leg right above his ankle! It appears the hard part will be keeping him off his leg for at least six weeks! We are so blessed to have all of them with us today. This posting is going to show a few pictures of John, Laurie, and their family. If my nieces and nephew are reading this – Aunt Sue needs updated pictures!! J
Through the years with John, Laurie, Dawn, JD, and Lindsay – we love you all! I will be making a posting as the weeks go on for my other brothers and their family – have to keep peace! I love them all very, very much!! (Two bushels and a peck and a hug around the neck – right Billy?)
This picture was taken on January 22, 1989 - our birthday - John is still four minutes older!

Food for Thought

Food for Thought

Have you had times in your life when you have moments of foolish thoughts or deeds; had a grudge towards someone; and forgot who we need to turn to help us overcome all our short comings? Sure, as humans we all have had similar experiences, but we need to remember that HE overcame the world and died for us so that we might be saved.

Bill and I have lots of devotional books and study Bibles that helps us when we need that extra explanation for something on our mind and heart. When I get really stressed out, anxious, hurt, frustrated, angry, and overwhelmed, I will pull my devotional books off the shelf and browse through them to locate the one verse or passage that seems to speak to me and help me with my insecurity. I am a person who has always tried to be the peacemaker and the one who tries to help all those around me to have a life that is perfect! I am like a “momma” bear trying to protect her cubs. In reality, I know I can not produce that perfect life – the only thing I can do is pray for all I love, know, and even those I don’t know.

To assure all who might read this blog and know the family – there is no one instant or problem that caused me to write this! As they say in the movies – “if any of these problems may lend you to think it is about you – it is purely accidental! But again, if any of these cause any reader to stop and think, then remember the power of prayer! Sometimes something bears on my heart and I have to share it. Usually Bill is my sounding board – today will be no exception because he will read it before this blog is posted. This is the teacher coming out in both of us!

The following are passages that struck a chord for me today – bits of wisdom to remind me of whom I need to turn to when I need help, regardless how small my problem might be.

“Oh God, You know my foolishness;
And my sins are not hidden from You.”
Psalm 69:5

“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge
against one of your people, but love
your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.”
Leviticus 19:18

“You will have tribulations; but be of
good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

One of my favorite passages is :

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy,
it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude,
it is not self-seeking; it is not easily angered;
it keeps no records of wrong.”
I Corinthians 13; 4-5

I hope that you will be blessed and these passages will give you food for thought as the work week begins!

Pick a Winner!

Pick a Winner!

One of the things I have always liked to do when teaching was working with the kids on a poetry unit. It was always amazing at how creative they could be when they tried! Through the years I have written poems for special occasions and special people. Even though I don’t teach now, I still like to dibble at writing. I had ordered some books about writing (yes, even though I don’t need it for school, I wanted it for me!) Bill looked at them and got into the mood to write – a poem no less!
I’m going to post the one he wrote as well as the one I wrote today. We’ll let you pick a winner. :):):)

Bill’s creativeness:

My loving husband is a big, fat jerk
He really is a no good lazy lurk
If it’s anything hard, he will always shirk
He has never done any kind of work

I do not agree with Bill’s interpretation of himself - except maybe he will shirk hard work if he can!!!

Sue’s creativeness:

Clouds and wind, with the sun beaming through
Makes a perfect day for me and you
On the beach we will always enjoy
Memories forever, not to be destroyed

On a more serious note, Bill really can write and has penned several articles for historical books and magazines. I have also had one of my poems published which some of you have been voting for on poetry.com. The poem “The Tears in His Eyes” was inspired by a veteran who had tears running down his cheek after the 9/11 catastrophe.
In some ways, I think we will always have that “teacher” part of us that will cause us to write – whether it serious writing or not - only time will tell!

God's Pictures in the Sky

Wednesday – July 23, 2008
7:00 ***************

God’s Pictures

While we were gone to the beach, we were able to watch the clouds as they floated by us and see shapes, animals, and anything else our imagination would allow us to see. As I was waiting for the train to clear a crossing today, I looked toward the skies. The clouds were just so white and puffy – just like cotton balls placed high in the sky. As I watched these clouds, I saw Ginger – my white poodle I had over thirty years ago! The formation of these clouds was depicting the head of a curly haired poodle in my overactive imagination. Just as quickly as I saw the “head of a poodle,” it disappeared in the blink of an eye!

This made me think back to the days when I would stay with my grandparents who lived up a “holler” on the left fork of Lick Creek – Wayne County, WV. After helping in the garden, we would bring the beans we had picked to the front porch to get ready for an afternoon of work. My grandfather always took a small nap after lunch (he was always up by 5:30) – he would lie down on the front porch. My brothers and I would try and stay quiet, so some days I would lie down in the swing. It was there I would see the beautiful clouds that God had created. I would “see” things and remember asking the boys if they saw what I did in the clouds. Needless to say, we never saw the same things!

Today made me realize that we don’t take the time to look at God’s pictures in the sky when we are home. It’s the same sky as when we were at the beach ( okay the longitude and latitude may be different!), but we just don’t seem to pay any attention to the clouds as they float by us – maybe we do when they are dark and it looks like a storm is approaching. We are too busy with our lives, and we tend to keep out heads down because we are always on a mission.
This also reminds me of an “Andy and Barney” scene when a stranger comes to town and is in a hurry to get his car fixed so that he might continue on his trip. It was a Sunday when all in Mayberry takes it easy and enjoys the slow pace of life. They took time to smell the roses! If we would take the time, then we might see more of the pictures in the sky that God has placed there just for us.
We hope you enjoy these pictures and hope you can see the picture that God created!
These are from the beach.
Do you see angel wings?????

A dark gray blanket starting to cover the ocean.

These were taken while standing in our back yard. Beautiful pictures in the sky from Craig Road!
Sometimes it is just enough to look at the overall beauty and not look for an object!
But, it is okay for you to use your imagination and you might be surprised what you can see!
