Even though Dink is home, he is still trying his best to recover so he can get back to where he was before the stroke. He is able to communicate -even though it is like playing charades at times in trying to get what he wants to tell us! He tries so hard, and sometimes he will get frustrated and simply say, "just forget it!" This has to be so frustrating to know what you want to say, but can't get it out so others will know.
He and Rhonda are trying to get over a severe sinus/ear infection. Dink has been experiencing severe pain with his right arm and shoulder. He had never been one to complain, but this pain must be excruciating as he will let us know how much pain he is experiencing.
With much research and talking with those who have worked with stroke victims, there is a fear Dink may be showing symptoms of RSD - According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), RSD is "a chronic pain condition that is believed to be the result of dysfunction in the central or peripheral nervous systems." Because many stroke patients can not tell their care givers or doctors of the severe pain, many felt it was just in their mind - a phantom pain. But through research, it has been discovered this pain is real!!! The possibility that Dink may have RSD has been heart wrenching for us all - especially Rhonda.
We know Dink has a long road ahead of him, and we know he has never been one to whine about pain. The pain he has endured through the years with his back, legs, and his heart has been pain most of us will never imagine. You can see the pain in his face, but never a word. The pain he is having with his arm and shoulder has brought sounds of agony from him.
During therapy yesterday, they decided that most of his pain may be coming from his arm and shoulder being dislocated! Where he had allowed his arm to hang it appears to have separated from his shoulder. The therapist thinks this is where his pain is coming from and that it may not be RSD. We are praying that the new brace he will be wearing will help the arm and shoulder relocate and that the pain will subside!
I think about all those who complain about "little" things and whine about something trivial and wonder how some of them would handle the excruciating pain Dink has 24/7 and then goes through the therapy that causes even more pain. Some people have a low tolerance for pain while other seem to be able to handle more pain. Dink is one who does have a high level for tolerating pain. It is harder on us to see him in pain.
I just want Dink to know we are praying for you and that we are so proud of you. We know that it is not easy to do what you are doing, but we know the blood that flows through your veins comes from those who did not know the word quit. You have not quit, but have worked just as hard as your body will allow you.
Know that Mom, Mike, and I love you very much, and that we are so proud of not only you, but Rhonda too, She has been the rock to try and get you and keep you on the road to recovery. We love you Rhonda, and we are praying for you too!!!!
The next time you get a cold, stump you toe, or get a twinge remember those who may be in far worse pain than you, and possibly your "pain" will not seems as bad. I have known several people who always had something wrong with them, and they always let you know about every pain. Their pain and problems were always much worse than anyone elses.
Dink's pain is real; excruciating; agonizing; and at times I'm sure unbearable. I pray that God will give him the strength to help him overcome this pain and continue on with his recovery.
We all love you Dink - and Jesus does too!!!!!!! He is right there with you all the way!
