Crafty - The Makings of a Gift

Wednesday - January 21, 2009

Many of you that know me personally know that I love working on crafts - cross stitch, plastic canvas, crocheting, and most recently working with beads! Out of all these crafts, crocheting and cross stitch have been at the top of my list of favorite things to do for many years. It has always been a question of WHEN to find the time to work on the things I want to make! Since retiring one would think I would have all the time in the world to work on my creativity, but for some reason, I don't!!!! I think I'm still getting use to the idea I don't have to grade all those papers!!!!
Bill has recently taken an interest in painting with the guidance of Bob Ross videos. This is great! The only problem is that it takes the paintings a loooong time to dry, so we are trying to figure out where to put them out of harm's way! Toby sniffs everything out, therefore, putting them on the floor is out of the question! He would love to put his print on each of the paintings! Bill is progressing and feeling more at ease with the painting process. He's not doing bad job if I do say so myself! :)
He has a video to help him while I use patterns! However, most of the time I tend to do my own thing. I have "bunches and bunches" of books with patterns for all the crafts I think I would like to try! I need a big room for all my crafts! Guess we need to win the lottery so we can build me a craft house! :):)
I love making things for my family and friends. I try to pick a color, style, pattern that I think they would like. I know we all don't like the same thing, but I try my best to match what I am making with that special person!

Jeni's birthday was January 6, just a little less than two weeks after Christmas! We had a really nice Christmas with her and David, but we couldn't think of anything "to buy" her this soon after Christmas. So, my mind starts wheeling around, and I came up with the idea of making her something from my bead collection. But what??? I have collected through the years materials from AC Moore and Michael's just to have on hand when I decided I wanted to be creative. When I retired, my retirement gift was a really nice gift card from AC Moores! Boy did I have a field day with that!

Once I had decided what I wanted to do, the next problem was what to choose from my collection to accomplish my goal. I had kits, individual beads of all kinds, shapes, and colors! Once I got past this stage, the making of the present was a breeze - except when working with the small beads - the old eyes (which have cataracts) tended to give me a few problems! Bill graciously came up with giving me more light by putting one of our small lamps on the table for me. This helped tremendously.

The pictures I am going to post will show a portion of what I had to work with and the finished products! My first step was to sort through ALL of my supplies; place them on the table so I can make a decision; make that decision; and then make the jewelry. I had looked at my beading books; downloaded and printed potential patterns I might use; and now I was ready to begin.

Hope you enjoy looking at my technique of how to decide what to use when making a present!
These pictures show the initial supplies I chose from my collection of material.

The tools

The beads

The collection from which to narrow the choices.

The narrowed down collection

The materials I chose not to use this time!

The first set was made with sterling silver and swarovski RED crystals - Jeni's favorite color!

The designing stage - my own and not from my many patterns I've collected!

The finished set - earrings and necklace.

I decided to make two sets - then I could choose which one to send to Jeni. Bill helped me pick out the main beads for this next set.

The materials- I (we) chose a natural stone shaped with turquoise colors, and then I had to decide what other beads would enhance the stone!

The materials and the design

Set # 2 is now completed - it took longer to make because of the smaller spacers and e-beads used!

Both set are now completed. Now the decision was to choose which one Jeni would receive as a "belated" birthday gift! Red is her favorite color, and I thought the colors of the other one would look great on her - sooooo we sent both sets! Hope you enjoy them Jeni! We love you!

I have the stages of a crochet project, but I'm not posting them until the gifts are delivered! :):)

And the Winner Is . . . .

Monday - January 19, 2009

Bill and I both would like to take a moment to say thank you to all who responded to let us know that our blog is being read. We don't write for ourselves - we do the postings for you the readers and followers. We do try to post pictures - old and new - because we all love looking at pictures (less reading) :):). I know that some of the pictures bring tears to the eyes of some of you only because they remind you of a loved one who is no longer here with us on earth. Your are not alone in shedding the tears - there are many tears streaming down the faces of us here as well.

We are trying to keep the blog positive with "happy" thoughts and happenings. Our lives by no means goes without some up and downs. WE do have many trials and worries, but we don't want to burden those of you who are already burdened to worry about us! We hope we can give you all a look at what we are doing, thinking, and planning since we have retired! It has been almost two years and we are still trying to find a "routine" in retirement. There is no routine for us yet - other than letting Toby in and out many, many times a day! :)

Some upcoming post will be a little show and tell - things we are making and how we have gone about doing them. Hopefully we can post some stories from our past that tell about the family and our experiences as teachers. I may refer to them as our "Remember When" series! So, look for some really "funny" stories from our past to be coming your way in the next month! We are still in the planning stages for them - jotting down instances and deciding which ones to include!

It is now 9:15 PM; we have a winner; and the pictures which we post will announce that winner! Thanks again to all who participated in this small endeavor of ours!!!

The list of potential winners!

The names are in the basket - unfolded because we still have less than fifteen minutes before we can pick the winner!

It is now a few minutes past nine and the names have been folded!

The hand is shuffling the names around so the winning name can be picked!

The Winner Is . . .

Congratulations Ruthie! Expect a package in the mail within the next week or two. It should be mailed by the weekend! It will be homemade just for YOU! :):)
Sorry Jeni and David - blame Bill - he drew the name out of the basket!!!

Brrrrrrr - it's cold outside!

Saturday - January 17, 2009

Old man winter has hit us with vengeance!! Had we been teaching - we would have been looking forward to a four day weekend! We do not have much snow, but that temperature is really cold.
We were in the minus range Friday morning, and it appears we are in that range now!

At the time of this writing - early Saturday morning - the weather stations on line say it is 1 degree with the wind chill being -8! I know other places where our loved ones are living are dealing with much colder weather! We just hope everyone can stay in where they will stay warm and safe!!

In a few hours - I need to go to bed and get some sleep - I will be heading down to Mom's! There is no doubt in my mind she will want to go to the store. With her taking Plavix - she'll have to wrap up with extra clothing! Hopefully, when she does go to the store - you try and tell her she needs to stay in doors - it will have warmed up! The only one she might listen to will be my oldest brother, Dink!!! We all get a kick out of her - if Dink said it needs to be done this way or that - then that's what we do! :):)

Hope and pray you all stay safe, warm, and healthy!

How Many Do Read the Blog?

Monday - January 12, 2009

Curiosity is getting the better of me. Doing the blog does take a while to do - especially when posting the pictures. Some of the postings I think will receive comments get nothing! Others have received a comment or two. We really appreciate those comments. Granted, I don't always leave a comment for the blogs I read daily - David, Jeni, Ruthie, and the others I have found which I enjoy. So I guess it is the same for our blog, many may read but don't respond. Now is the time we would love for you to respond! We would love to see how many do read the blog and enjoy what we write. We do want to try and keep family and friends updated on the many phases of our life. I love posting the pictures. We have pictures from both sides of the family and want to share more with you. If nothing else, it will become a history lesson on who our ancestors were for the younger generations!

Let's make it a contest - just like when we were teaching. If there was a prize, all of the kids would participate! Contact us by next Monday night at 9:00PM, and we will put all who have responded names in a "hat" and draw a winner! The prize will be determined at the time of who the winner might be! It will be something homemade!

So, if you would, please let us know if your are reading the blog by commenting here or emailing us at sue12250@gmail.com . I do know that we have received some new readers the last few months, and we really loved hearing from you! If you are new at reading the blog, please let us know that as well! We really want to hear from all of you!

We pray that you all are staying warm and safe and that God blesses you each and every day!
Love and prayers to you all!
